Area of Trapezoid vs Triangle vs Parallelogram

Triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids share deep mathematical roots. In fact, triangles and parallelograms are simply special boundary cases of the generalized trapezoid formula!

1. How a Trapezoid Becomes a Triangle

Imagine taking a standard trapezoid with bottom base b = 10 cm, top base a = 6 cm, and height h = 4 cm:

Trapezoid Area = ½ (6 + 10) × 4 = ½ (16) × 4 = 32 cm²

Now, gradually shrink the top parallel base a closer and closer to zero. As the two top vertices converge into a single vertex (an apex point), the top base length becomes 0. The shape is now a triangle!

Triangle Area = ½ (0 + 10) × 4 = ½ × 10 × 4 = 20 cm²

2. How a Trapezoid Becomes a Parallelogram

Conversely, suppose you stretch the top base until its length exactly matches the bottom base (a = b). The two opposite side legs now become parallel to each other.

Area = ½ (b + b) × h = ½ (2b) × h = b × h

Therefore, a parallelogram is simply an equilateral-base trapezoid. This unified viewpoint simplifies geometry dramatically for 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students.

3. Decomposing Trapezoids into Triangles and Parallelograms

Every non-rectangular trapezoid can be sliced into:

One Parallelogram + One Triangle: By drawing a line parallel to one of the slant legs from the top vertex down to the base.
Two Triangles: By connecting any single diagonal across opposite corners.
One Rectangle + Two Right Triangles: By dropping vertical altitudes from both top vertices.

This decomposition strategy is the foundation of grade 5 and 6 composite shape worksheets.
